  • Authorities in western Mexico have been keeping corpses in a refrigerated truck due to a shortage of morgue space and a rising death toll.
  • The truck has been moving to different towns in the state of Jalisco, with some residents complaining about the smell. At times it appears to have been abandoned.
  • An unnamed official told Reuters that there are around 150 bodies in the truck.
  • Roberto Lopez, the general secretary of the state, said the use of the truck showed “insensitivity” and that an investigation has been opened to determine who is responsible.

Mexico has been keeping dozens of corpses in a refrigerated truck because they’ve run out of morgue space.

Authorities in Western Mexico, faced with a rising death toll due to the country’s drug war, have been moving the truck between towns, where it has been angering residents.

One unnamed official in the state prosecutor’s office told news agency Reuters that there are around 150 bodies in the truck.

Mexico’s Jalisco state, which is home to Guadalajara, had a record 31,000 homicides in 2017, according to Reuters. One of the country’s most violent and powerful drug gangs, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, operates there.

The state’s morgue is overwhelmed. Roberto Lopez, the general secretary of the state, wrote on Twitter that the action shows “insensitivity and negligence in the actions of different authorities.”

In a tweet in Spanish, he said that an investigation has been opened to determine those responsible for using the truck to store bodies.

He ordered that the “refrigeration chamber with unclaimed disappeared persons immediately returns to the facilities of the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences” and he said that he had instructed the “State Executive Commission of Jalisco Victims to give punctual follow-up to the subject and to observe that the rights of the victims are not violated.”

He told local media that work is underway on a new facility that will be able to hold 700 bodies in its first phase, according to Reuters.

“When it is built, these bodies will be transferred,” Lopez said.

Luis Octavio Cotero, the head of the Jalisco forensic investigators unit, said that the country has “ran out of cemetery plots where we could bury them,” the BBC reports. Mexican laws prevent the cremation of bodies that are linked to violent crime.

The truck was noticed last week in a warehouse of a suburb on the outskirts of Mexico’s second largest city Guadalajara, where the mayor of the borough said it was illegally parked.

It then showed up, apparently abandoned, in a field beside some houses in a field further from the city, where neighbors complained about the smell, Reuters reported.

By Monday, authorities had moved it to a warehouse near the state prosecutor’s office in Guadalajara, according to the official at the office who did not provide his name.
