DO YOU QUALIFY? – Terri Hill

PAYING THE PRICE TO BE HIS DISCIPLE

Disciple” – Vine’s Expository Dictionary Definition: “a learner; an adherent; an imitator, a follower of one’s teacher”

  1. A. We must love Jesus supremely, above everyone and everything to be His disciple:

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?…So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple”; see Luke 14:26-33

  1. B. We must pay the full price by building an altar to the Lord in the “threshing floor”:

“Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the Lord in the threshing floor of Ornan…Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar therein unto the Lord: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Ornan said to David, Take it to thee…I give it all. And king David said to Ornan, I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight”; see 1 Chronicles 21:18-26; 2 Samuel 24:18-25

  1. Jesus used the illustration of one who gave all that she had to teach His disciples:

“Jesus…beheld how the people cast money into the treasury…And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites…And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living”; Mark 12:41-44

  1. D. Seeing the Kingdom of Heaven will cause a man to sell all that he has to obtain it:

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it”; Matthew 13:44-46

  1. 1. Disciples Lose Their Own Lives – “Remember Lot’s wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it…He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal”; Luke 17:32-33; John 12:25
  2. 2. Disciples Deny Themselves And Carry The Cross – “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me…And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”; Matthew 16:24; Luke 14:27
  3. 3. Disciples Endure Fiery Trials – “Ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith…though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ…Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you. But rejoice…when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy”; 1 Peter 1:6-7; 4:12-13
  4. 4. Disciples Must Be Counted Worthy – “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man…So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God for which ye also suffer”; Luke 21:36; 2 Thessalonians 1:4-5
  5. 5. Disciples Love Their Enemies – “Whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also…I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you…Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect…But love ye your enemies and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again…Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful  ”; Matthew 5:39-48; Luke 6:35-36
  6. 6. Disciples Do Not Love The Things Of The World – “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world…Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God”; 1 John 2:15-16; James 4:4
  7. 7. Disciples Spend Time Alone With Jesus – “And with many such parables spake he (Jesus) the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples…Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus”; Mark 4:33-34; Acts 4:13
  8. 8. Disciples Manifest The Life Of Christ – “But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God…We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake”; John 3:21; 2 Cor. 4:8-11
  9. 9. Disciples Have One Master – “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon…But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ”; Matthew 6:24; 23:8-10
  10. 10. Disciples Forgive Others Continually – “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven…And when ye stand praying, forgive if ye have aught against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses”; Matthew 18:21-22; Mark 11:25-26
  11. 11. Disciples Reject The Pleasures Of Sin – “Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he (Moses) had respect unto the recompense of the reward…Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter”; Heb.11:25-26; James 5:5
  12. 12. Disciples Die Daily – “What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? For I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus…As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter…I die daily”; Acts 21:13; Romans 8:36; 1 Corinthians 15:31
  13. 13. Disciples Hold Fast To The Teachings Of Christ – “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free…Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”; John 8:31; Titus 1:9
  14. 14. Disciples Demonstrate The Spirit And Power Of God – “Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God…I have fully preached the gospel of Christ… For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power”; Romans 15:19; 1 Corinthians 2:2-5
  15. 15. Disciples Desire To Know God Intimately – “But ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you…Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ…That I may know Him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death”; John 13:17; Philippians 3:8,10
  16. 16. Disciples Who Suffer Obtain A Good Report – “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings…bonds and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth…these obtained a good report through faith”; 2 Timothy 2:12; Hebrews 11:36-39
  17. 17. Disciples Endure To The End – “And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved…Neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy…Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls”; Mark 13:13; Acts 20:24; 1 Peter 1:9
  18. Disciples Enter The Kingdom Through Much Tribulation – “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world…Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God”; John 16:33; Acts 14:22
  19. 19. Disciples Are Made A Spectacle – “For we are made a spectacle unto the world…we are fools for Christ’s sake…we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place…working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day…ye were made a gazingstock (spectacle) both by reproaches and afflictions…”; 1 Corinthians 4:9-13; Hebrews 10:33
  20. 20. Disciples Endure Family Division Due To Their Faith – “I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household…A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house”; Matthew 10:34-36; Mark 6:4
  21. 21. Disciples Are Servants Unto Others – “Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them…But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many…by love serve one another”; Mark 10:42-45; Galatians 5:13
  22. 22. Disciples Are Approved As They Persevere – “For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men…But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned…By honor and dishonor, by evil report…as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things”; Romans 14:18; 2 Corinthians 6:4-10

And when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory…Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life”; 1 Corinthians 9:17-18; 2 Timothy 4:8; James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:2-4
  24. 24. Disciples Carefully Handle God’s Word – “Therefore, seeing we have this ministry…not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth…These (Bereans) were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”; 2 Corinthians 4:1-2; Acts 17:11
  25. 25. Disciples Do The Father’s Will – “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven…For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me”; Matthew 7:21; John 6:38

And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things…to obtain an incorruptible (crown). 27. 27. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme…I persecuted them”; John 15:20; Acts 26:10-11
  32. 32. Disciples Are God’s Family Members – “Who is my mother? And who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! Disciples Are Sacrificial Givers – “Them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common…Neither was there any among them that lacked; for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need”; Acts 4:32-36; Matthew 19:21-22
  36. 36. Disciples Hear The Urgent Call To Follow Jesus – “And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord suffer me first to go and bury my father.
