Scripture & Prayer: Caleb: Whole-Hearted (Jolie)

Caleb: Whole-Hearted

“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’ But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.’ And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out…
[Then the Lord said:] ‘But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it’” (Num. 13:30-32, 14:20, 24). NKJV

Heavenly Father, we can learn so much from Caleb. He was such a mighty, godly, warrior man of God! Joshua and Caleb were the only two of the twelve spies to NOT voice an evil report when they returned from spying out the Promise Land. They were different! They knew that with You on their side, Lord, they could indeed take this land. They were not scared because they knew that You were with them. It’s like the famous English preacher Leonard Ravenhill once said: “A man who is intimate with God is not intimidated by any man.” Joshua and Caleb were close to You, Lord! And because of this, they were not intimidated by the tall, strong cities or the giants and any other enemies in the land! They knew that You were their Defender!

In these verses above, we read that Caleb basically told the people to shut up and stop being so fearful! He tried earnestly to convince the people that they could FOR SURE defeat the giants and other enemies of the land (the Amalekites, Hittites, Jebusites, Amorites and Canaanites – Numbers 13:29). They could indeed go and take what was theirs! Lord, although the majority of the people were not on board with Caleb, YOU saw him. You saw his spirit. You saw his faith in You. You saw how he tried so hard to point the people back to You!

In fact, the word “Caleb” means “whole-hearted.” Caleb was whole-heartedly devoted to You! He knew what You said, and his faith would not falter – regardless of the obstacles! And as these Scriptures state Lord, because of Caleb’s faith and his radical devotion to You – You richly blessed him! You indeed brought him into the Promise Land and his seed (descendants) inherited it.

God, may we be whole-heartedly devoted to You, like Caleb! In Deuteronomy 6:5, You commanded Your people this: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.’” Caleb loved You, Lord, with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his strength. And because he fully followed You, as You said he did in Numbers 14:24, he was not fazed by whatever trials or crises lay across his path. Lord, may we be like Caleb! May we follow You fully, keeping our eyes so set upon You, that no giants in our lands would give us reason to fear, hold back or avoid what You have set before us.

You said that Caleb had a different spirit with him. God, we want this different spirit with us too! Whatever You have to do, Lord, change us! Make us into fearless, faith-filled warriors like Caleb! Help us to humbly submit to the purging, cleansing and deliverance we need to change! We don’t want to be numbered with the ten spies walking in fear, doubt and unbelief. We want to be among the two (Joshua and Caleb). They were the remnant (the faithful minority who would not cower in fear or bend the knee to idols and unbelief). Lord, make us solidly part of the Remnant! Caleb stood apart from the masses, separated from the majority. He was sold out to You, Lord, and was firmly on Your side. Lord, whole-hearted devotion to You is only the minority of believers, and always has been. But may we unashamedly stand with the minority. May we be leaders and pillars of strength and devotion to You and Your Word (all of Your Word) in a world of compromise, spiritual laziness and looking for the easy ways out and escape routes.

Lord God, we thank You for Caleb’s example. We want to be like him! Even if everyone around us is walking in doubt, unbelief and fear – may we stand strong on Your Word. May we be encouragers, may we help point people back to You. May we be leaders, as Caleb was, and strive to get people on board with YOUR plans, over our own. Give us whole-hearted devotion, as Caleb had, Lord God! May we have a different spirit with us. We declare in faith that WE ARE THE REMNANT! And for those of us who aren’t there yet – may we strive to get there! It’s up to us! The only thing that would hold us back is ourselves. By Your grace, Lord, we will stand as Caleb did and face our giants and take the land (the spiritual and physical territory) You have ordained as ours! And we thank You for the work You’re doing in each of us. To God alone be all the glory! In Jesus’s holy name, amen.
