Scripture & Prayer: How Do We See Ourselves? (Jolie)

“And he [Gideon] said to Jether his firstborn, ‘Rise, kill them!’ But the youth would not draw his sword; for he was afraid, because he was still a youth” (Judg. 8:20). NKJV

Small Dog Barking at Large Dog Saint Bernards

Heavenly Father, may we learn from the example in this story. Gideon had just captured two evil kings of Midian following his great victory. He ordered his firstborn son to execute them – but his son refused because he was a “youth.” Lord, like this young man, are we not able or willing to carry out valiant feats for You because we are still youths? Just a few verses after this, the men of Israel tried to make Gideon their king. Gideon’s son was hindered from using his authority – as the son of a king (in spirit) – because he SAW himself as a youth. Had this young man seen himself as the warrior he was called to be – he would have risen to the challenge and executed those two wicked kings – despite his literal age in earthly years.

Lord, how do we see ourselves? Do we see ourselves as little? Incompetent? Inexperienced? Weak? Stupid? Too young? Too old? Having too little faith? Having too little knowledge of Your Word? Do we see ourselves as unable to pray “well”? Too timid?… Lord, may we learn to see ourselves as YOU see us! You saw Gideon as a MIGHTY MAN OF VALOR while he was still hiding in the wine press to thresh wheat!

Your Word teaches us that we are a lot of awesome things! We are NOT little, incompetent, inexperienced, weak, stupid, too young, too old… Lord, may we profess with confidence what YOU say about each of us!

I AM A SON OF GOD (John 1:12).

I AM THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (2 Cor. 6:14-18).

I AM HIS WORKMANSHIP (Eph. 2:10).

I AM ACCEPTED IN THE BELOVED (Eph. 1:6).

I AM AN AMBASSADOR FOR CHRIST (2 Cor. 5:20).

I AM A WORKER WITH HIM (2 Cor. 6:1).

WE ARE / I AM A CHOSEN GENERATION (1 Pet. 2:9).

WE ARE / I AM CALLED (1 Pet. 2:9).

I WILL BE HOLY FOR YOU ARE HOLY, LORD (Lev. 20:26).

Lord God, if we feel limited in carrying out spiritual victories, if we feel like we’re being held back by how we see ourselves, if we are hesitating to fight and plow through our obstacles, if we are currently too weak or timid to battle for our breakthroughs – then may we repeat these professions of faith over ourselves over and over until they sink in!

Lord, we know that much of life is a matter of perspective. Why do some little tiny dogs viciously bark at and challenge dogs four times their size? Because they don’t SEE themselves as being small and weak. These tiny dogs see themselves as MIGHTY, THREATENING, FEARSOME, and INDESTRUCTIBLE!

And THIS is how we must see ourselves! We are all this and more because of CHRIST IN US – THE HOPE OF GLORY! Thank You God, for what You’re doing in each of us. Help us to rise up and view ourselves through Your eyes!! Help us to rise up and see the great potential and warrior-spirits in the brothers and sisters in Christ all around us! May we stand to our feet, armed and ready, and help others get back up as well – AND STAY UP! In Jesus’s holy name, amen.
