Scripture & Verse: WE Need Peace (Jolie)

“I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands were freed from the baskets. You called in trouble, and I delivered you” (Ps. 81:6-7).

“Be anxious for nothing… let your requests be made known to God; and the PEACE of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7, emphasis added).

“I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved” (Ps. 16:8). NKJV

Heavenly Father, we need Your PEACE. There is so much going on around us. In every direction, if we focus on the world around us, our peace can vanish in a moment! Lord, You know that so many things rob us of our peace, so quickly. Some of us haven’t had peace for so long, we don’t even know what peace is anymore! Or just when we’re starting to feel a moment of peace, another crisis or piece of bad news comes in and once again, we’re back in a state of agitation, distress or dissonance.

Google online defines “peace” as: a freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. It’s a state of calmness, restfulness. It’s a freedom from or the cessation of war or violence (and how many of us have a war going on no further than in our own minds, our hearts?).

Lord, You want us to live in an ongoing state of peace. In the first verse above, it says that You remove our shoulder from the burden. Our hands are freed from the baskets. We called in trouble, and You delivered us. Symbolically, Lord, we each have a basket filled with our worries and concerns (like old toys). (Picture a large, wicker basket.) And when we take our eyes off of You, Lord, we continually dip our hands back into the baskets to pick up and play with, handle our old, familiar toys (our worries and concerns). After all, (just like when we were children) it’s easier to play with our old toys than to be mature, let them go, and move forward.  Many of us dip our hands back into our baskets and bring out our toys of worry to handle and play with so frequently, that our shoulders are tired! But, Lord, You enter our situation and remove our shoulder from the burden (our worries). You help us to no longer feel the urge to dip into the baskets and lift out and play with our old, familiar toys (our worries). Focused on You, we don’t need to play with our old, worn-out worries and concerns. Lord, like old toys that children refuse to throw away, some of us have had certain worries and concerns following or tormenting our souls for a long time!

But as we give up our old toys, our worries and concerns to You, Your PEACE then floods our souls – guarding our hearts and minds. As we let go, and learn to  lay it all before You – You do a supernatural work that changes us from discord to peace, from distress to tranquility, from agitation to an inner quietness of soul.

Lord, You are teaching us that instead of focusing on our baskets of worry and concern, we must focus on You. We must learn to stop dipping our hands back into the baskets to (again and again) foster and nurse our worries and concerns, and thereby wear out our shoulders (our hearts, our minds). As Your Word says in the last verse – You are always before us. We just have to choose to either focus on our basket of burdens, or focus on You. It’s one or the other. As we take our eyes off our burdens (and stop dipping back into the baskets), as we change our focus, and set our sights squarely on You, our Heavenly Father who is right in front of us, we will not be moved by worry or concern. Thank You Lord that true PEACE is only found in You. Thank You that we don’t have to be burdened, run down or controlled by worry and concern. You lift our burdens. You provide us with supernatural peace – despite ALL that’s going on around us. Please teach us, Lord God, to seek Your face  and NOT our old, familiar baskets of burdens! Thank You, Lord! In Jesus’s holy name, amen.
