Scripture & Prayer: Do Not Be Yoked Together With Unbelievers (Jolie)

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?… Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?..Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you'” (2 Cor. 6:14-15,17). NIV

Heavenly Father, this principle cannot be stressed enough. It is hugely important that we are careful who we get close to. Who we deem our closest friends, who we confide in, who we seek advice / counsel from, who we have fun with outside of school / work: these matters can make us or break us – truly. You are not suggesting, You are commanding us here to not be yoked together (attached, joined, tethered to) unbelievers. Of course we have unbelievers in our lives. And how will they get saved if we don’t love them and share the Gospel with them? But if we choose to make unbelievers our closest associates, friends, and partners in life – they will surely affect our own walks with You in a negative way. It’s unavoidable. It can be a very subtle, sneaky process. And before we know it, we’re thinking, talking and acting just like unbelievers. We’re no different from them anymore. But if we look at Your example, we see that while on earth, You associated with unbelievers almost everywhere You went. And, thankfully, many got saved! But Your closest friends were ALWAYS godly believers. You knew how vital this was. So please forgive us, Lord God, for compromises. Thank You that You tell us these things because You love us and You know what’s best for us. And You are forgiving and kind as we are learning to walk right before You. If necessary, Lord God, please give us the grace and wisdom to distance ourselves from ungodly people who are (if we’re honest) being used by the enemy to water down our own faith and draw us back into the world.  We love them Lord, but we will obey You and choose to seek out time, counsel and friendship with / from people who love Jesus, as we do. In Jesus’s holy name, amen.
