Scripture & Prayer: Jonah & Ninevah (Jolie)

Jonah Running From God

“Then the Lord said to [to Jonah], ‘Is it right for you to be angry?… And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left…?'” (Jonah 4:4,11). NKJV

Heavenly Father, Your heart towards Nineveh is the heart that we desperately need! Nineveh was a very ancient, wicked city. They were a long-time enemy of Your people. And Nineveh was known for its cruelty and pride! The book of Nahum gives us an idea of who the Ninevites were, and how You felt about them.

Historically, the Ninevites treated their enemies and captives with brutality, doing such things as severing hands and feet, gouging out eyes, peeling all the skin off their victims and / or impaling them. And YET – once Jonah preached repentance to them – the great and wicked city of Nineveh repented!! But Jonah was angry. Nineveh was so wicked – he wanted to see them destroyed by Your judgment. You are telling Jonah in these above verses that he should not be angry, and that You were RIGHT to have mercy on them and give them a chance to repent. Lord God, please have mercy on us! We’ve all had this heart of Jonah before, or perhaps some of us still do. Please forgive us for the times we’ve wanted to see judgment, instead of Your mercy with people! Thank God You had mercy on US! May we, as You do, HATE the sin and the demons (operating through them – using them like puppets) but LOVE the sinners! No matter how wicked someone is – please open our eyes and enable us to recognize the demons operating through a person – rather than focus on the person. Ephesians 6 is clear: “We do NOT wrestle against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities…” May we truly love people and pray for them (with sincere compassion) – to repent and be delivered. We need Your heart, Lord God! In Jesus’s mighty name, amen.
