Did Jesus, Stephen, and Paul teach against the law of God?

Did Jesus, Stephen, and Paul teach against the law of God?

Here is a dialog with someone in regard to the law of God vs law of sin.

My post:

if the law is done away with, why do you preach righteousness? If sin is transgression of the law, and Jesus did away with the law of God, then why do you tell people to stop sinning?

Other person:

We preach law to reveal the peoples sin, So that the preaching of sin will lead them to Christ. So that Christ can set them free from sin..

“Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh shall be justified in his sight, FOR BY THE LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN”(Romans 3:20)….

So we preach the law to help the people understand there need for a savior. Sin is transgression of law. So law is useful and Holy. but those who are in Christ are set free from sin. And where there is no sin, there is no law. We are freed.. In Christ, through the redemption power of the Holy Spirit

My Response:

Thanks for the response. But what you stated several times in your response is that Christ set us free from the law of sin (and death), not the law of God. Which I completely agree with.

If a person driving down the road 75 mph in a 45 mph zone and gets a pulled over and gets a ticket, he will be “under the law”. Meaning he transgressed the law and now has an ordinance against him. He must appear in court and pay the penalty for breaking the law. NO amount of good driving will ever remove the existing ordinance against him. The penalty must be paid in order to be free. Once the penalty is paid for the transgression, is the person now free from the existing driving laws? Absolutely not. Sin is transgression of the law. You break the law, you need to repent and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus. As we sin daily, we need to repent daily. But the more we walk in the spirit, the less we fulfill the lust of the flesh in our walk.

The law of God defines righteousness. The fourth commandment is still the fourth commandment. It was never changed by God. Which laws that Jesus lived by should we keep? Most Christians today have fallen for the deception that “Jesus fulfilled the law and so they do not need to keep the law”. We do not follow the law by the letter, but by the Spirit of God. Faith establishes the law of God.

Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

As mentioned already, the law cannot quicken us and bring life. Only the blood of Yeshua can do that. But if we continue to choose sin, then we trample the blood of Yeshua and darken our soul with sin. If we continue, we will go back into bondage to sin and fall from grace.

Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Grace is the “power” given to the humble to live holy and righteously. Grace is not given as an excuse to sin. People frequently say that are under grace as an excuse for choosing sin — this is a BIG NO NO.

Galatians 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

I encourage you to rethink your position on Sabbath and consider that your current view is actually a RCC based view.

I encourage everyone to read a book by Paul Wilber called Touching the heart of God

Other Person:

But if the MINISTRY OF DEATH, WRITTEN AND ENGRAVED ON STONES, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

The commandments of God were WRITTEN AND ENGRAVED ON STONE. Scripture calls it the ministry of death. Scripture also calls the letter of the law the law of sin..

because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”(Romans 8:2)…

why does scripture call the law of God in the old testament the law of sin ??

“Therefore by the deeds of the law, NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED in his sight, for by the deeds of the law is the knowledge of sin”(Romans 20)

The purpose of Gods law is the make sin manifest, to reveal to humanity how sinful they are so that they can see there need for a savior..

It was also a tutor to help keep Gods people in line until Jesus Christ came. after Jesus Christ came there”s no longer a need for a tutor

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. THEREFORE THE LAW WAS OUR TUTOR TO BRING US TO CHRIST, that we might be justified by faith. BUT AFTER FAITH HAS COME WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER A TUTOR For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”Galatians 3:19-26)

FOR ALL THE LAW IS FULFILLED IN THIS

“For ALL THE LAW is fulfilled in one word, even this: you shall love your neighbor as yourself”(Galatians 5:14)

Born again Christians are under a new covenant now, a new law, the law of love

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”(John 13:34-35)

“Love does no harm to a neighbor therefore LOVE IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW”(Romans 13:10)

I hope this helps

My Response:

I really appreciate the dialog brother and thank you for the detailed responses. I would like to start with addressing this fundamental point. You stated or rather asked:

“why does scripture call the law of God in the old testament the law of sin ??”

This is part of the misunderstanding in the Body of Christ today. The Law of God and the law of sin are actually two DIFFERENT laws. The law of God shows what righteousness is and therefore reveals sin and further reveals to us that there is another law working in us that compels us to sin. Let’s examine Romans 7

Paul first explains that the Law of God is spiritual
Romans 7
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Paul explains that there is a law working against us to cause us to do evil
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

The inward man (new man) delights in the law of God
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

If the law of God is equal to the law of sin as you insinuate, then why does Paul state his inward man delights after a law of sin as you believe it is?

The law of sin wars against the law of God (the law of his mind as seen in verse 22)
23 But I see ANOTHER law in my members, warning against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members

So we either serve the law of sin OR the law of God. They are not the same.
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Compare this to Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
This is because the flesh serves the law of sin which works to keep you from serving the law of the Spirit.

This is why Paul continues here:
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk NOT after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

So if we walk by the Spirit we serve and obey the Law of God. If we walk according to the flesh we serve the law of sin and transgress the law of God.

When we walk in the flesh and serve the law of sin we shall die (i.e. the law of sin and death).

When we in the Spirit serve the law of God we shall live unto God (law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus)

You are absolutely correct in saying that obeying the law will NOT bring life. Life only comes by the quickening power of the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ. So we say that Justification is by faith alone. Justification removes the transgressions, not the law that was transgressed. Refer back to my post on getting a speeding ticket.

This is where the body of Christ gets off track. The spiritually minded man LOVES the law of God because the law of God is spiritual and the carnally minded man HATES the law of God.

In regard to love, you are again absolutely correct that we are to love, but we are to love our Abba Father and our Neighbor. The phrases such as “For all the law is fulfilled…” in and of themselves do not negate the law of God, but only serve to explain and sum up the HEART and PURPOSE of the law of God. Many teach erroneously that those statements replace the law of God.
Consider this: Love is the hanger by which the law and prophets are hung upon. So a hanger of love with no law and prophets hung upon it is wrong and a coat of the law and the prophets with no hanger of love is wrong as well.
Jesus destroyed the power the enemy has over us. He did this by giving us a new heart of flesh and writing His law in the fleshy tablets of our heart and giving us the Holy Spirit. The law that once worked against us to compel us to transgress the law of God, no longer has power over us. With a new heart we desire to obey our Fathers law and statutes.
In regard to 2 Cor 3:7, If our government passed a set of laws that NO one could obey and the penalty was death, we could easily say that it was a ministration of death that was passed. Now, let’s say our government provided free assistance to everyone in order to obey the laws? All you have to do is receive the assistance that was provided and the laws that were once impossible are now made possible to obey.
This is what our heavenly Father has done for us. He provided the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, as a propitiation for our sin of transgressing the law of God and additionally gave us the Holy Spirit as our helper and comforter to walk as Jesus Christ walked and obey our heavenly Father and keep his commandments and statutes.
Read Jer 31, Ezek 11, and 36. This is exactly what the prophets prophesied God would do.

Let’s examine the book of Acts for a moment.

Acts 6:13 And set up FALSE WITNESSES, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and SHALL CHANGE the CUSTOMS which Moses delivered us.

Question 1: What did these witnesses state?

Answer 1: That Stephen was preaching against that which was delivered by Moses.

Question 2: Where they true or false witnesses?

Answer 2: They where FALSE witnesses?

Since God has stated they were false witnesses, that means Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, was NOT preaching against the customs which Moses delivered us.

Oh there is another… Acts 24:13 Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.14 … believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

What are they accusing Paul of?

Acts 25:7 And when he [Paul] was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could NOT prove.

They could not prove what?

People tried to accuse Jesus, Stephen, and Paul of teaching against the law and prophets as well.

Will you do the same also?

Shalom brother
